How Many Words Do You Know for “Snow”?

One morning I woke up to find my entire backyard covered in snow. The first thought through my head was, “I wish I had a snowboard!” Not that I know how to snowboard or have ever been snowboarding in my life, but I’ve never lived in a place that snows and the upcoming Winter Olympics are inspiring me to try Winter sports.

I did gymnastics, how hard could it be? I’m sure flipping through the air with a snowboard is just like flipping in a floor routine… (said with heavy sarcasm)

The second thought through my head was, “Does this ‘snow’ even count?” One afternoon about a month ago, I was outside reveling in some precipitation that wasn’t rain, but I was told this wasn’t “snow” it was only “dusting”. Another night, I got excited about the snow falling as I walked to my car, but it didn’t seem like real snow, it was more of a “snow drizzle”.

And therein lies the problem – being from So Cal, I have all these words to describe rain but don’t know the proper language to describe the snow.

What would be the Snow-Equivalent for these words for rain?

  • Sheets of Rain
  • Raining
  • Pouring
  • Hailing
  • Drizzling
  • Sprinkling
  • Misting
  • Showers
  • Cloud Burst
  • TORRENTIAL SPRINKLES ***My personal favorite, courtesy of my BFF who heard this word on the news when she moved to So Cal**
